The German iF Product Design Award, established in 1954 and organized by the German International Forum Design Company, is one of the world's oldest design awards and also referred to as the "Oscar of Industrial Design." In 2011, Ta Tung aluminium's "all-in-one handle" brought the art of aesthetics to aluminium doors and windows. Standing out from over 8,000 entries from 52 countries, it became the first Taiwanese aluminium door and window company to win the German iF Design Award, gaining international recognition. The greatest significance of this award is that it symbolizes that Ta Tung product design capabilities have reached international standards.
From colonial-era mining and smelting to post-war industrial recovery and economic takeoff, the growth of Taiwan’s aluminium industry mirrors the nation’s journey toward modernization. Shaped by energy shortages, technology transfer, talent cultivation, and continuous equipment upgrades, this history is more than the evolution of a metal industry – it is a testament to generations of industrial conviction and professional dedication.
Originated from predictions by renowned figures in the steel industry, Mr. Hsu Lun and Mr. Huang Shun-tien, who foresaw significant economic growth in Taiwan, particularly in the construction and real estate sectors. This prediction led to a surge in demand for raw materials such as aluminium doors and windows. For this reason, in 1969, Ta Tung aluminium Co., Ltd., together with construction industry figures Yang Wen-sheng and Chen Rang, and pharmaceutical industry figure Zhang Tian-de, raised funds and established the company in October of the same year at 2nd Floor, No. 85, Nanjing West Road, Taipei City. The factory was located in the Neili Industrial Park, Taoyuan. In 1991, Ta Tung broke through technological barriers and became the first domestic company to launch a "new patented aluminium window with removable inner sash," significantly improving the safety of cleaning building glass. Subsequently, the company launched the 870 series, 1270 series, 895 series, 1095 series, and the Athens series, making it the aluminium door and window company in Taiwan with the most diverse window product lines.
